The First World War Comes To Life project was a large-scale, animated exhibit that travelled across Canada, 2015-2016.
About the Project
First World War Comes to Life is a fully-animated exhibit that explores the lesser known wartime contributions of the Canadian men and women who served beyond the trenches, both at home and overseas. From home front relief efforts and wartime production to frontline communications and medical aid, the exhibit offers a series of dynamic displays and activities for visitors to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a world behind the front lines.

La Première guerre mondiale reprend vie est une exposition interactive qui examine les contributions d’ailleurs oubliées des Canadiennes et des Canadiens qui servirent d’autre part que dans les tranchées, autant à domicile qu’outremer. L’exposition présente une série de montages animés mettant en vedette les efforts de soutien et de la production en temps de guerre, ainsi que la communication et l’aide médicale, de manière à immerger les participants dans ses réalités visuelles, sonores et olfactives.
Event Details
Visitors of all ages are invited to engage with live costumed interpreters and explore how they too can contribute to the war effort:
Join a victory rally and ‘knit your bit’ for the boys on the front
Explore the inside of a 1918 Ford Ambulance and train for your First Aid Nursing certificate
Keep the lines of communication open and send a message by carrier pigeon
Sow the seeds of victory in your very own backyard war garden
Inspect the handiwork of a munitionette and see if you are fit for factory war work
Generously funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage and Veterans Affairs, First World War Comes to Life is curated by the Victoria County Historical Society. The exhibit is currently travelling across Canada through to 2018 to mark the centenary of the First World War. While the project works to share collective wartime experiences from across Canada, the exhibit also highlights stories of local contributions relevant to each community it visits. Through these overlooked stories, First World War Comes to Life expands the definition of what it meant to serve and explores the legacy of this pivotal time in Canadian history.

Explorez l’intérieur d’une ambulance Ford de 1918, et recevez votre certification de premiers soins infirmiers
Tenez-vous responsable des réseaux de communication, et envoyez un message par pigeon voyageur
Assurez la paix dans votre propre jardin de guerre
Inspectez le travail de munitionette et tentez l’expérience ouvrière de l’usine en temps de guerre
La Première Guerre mondiale reprend vie, un projet organisé et préparé par Victoria County Historical Society, est généreusement financé par le ministère du Patrimoine canadien et d’Anciens Combattants. L’exposition commémore le centenaire de la Première Guerre mondiale en voyageant partout au Canada jusqu’en 2018, et, de concert avec son but premier de reporter les expériences de guerre du pays, elle sera aussi en mesure de surligner les contributions locales des communautés visitées. D’après ces récits souvent négligés, La Première Guerre mondiale reprend vie tente de transformer la perception de ce moment important de l’histoire du Canada, et de redéfinir de manière plus inclusive la portée du service militaire.
