The Genealogy of Sir Sam Hughes

A note about names.

Although she was born Eliza Jane Hughes, she never used the Jane. Her father named her after the tune “Little Liza Jane”, which resulted in much teasing as she was growing up. Her name was never Elizabeth.

“Sam Hughes was born January 8, 1852 in West Durham and his birthplace was likely Solina. There has always been much confusion respecting his name. Eliza said he was named after their father’s brother and that he was christened Sam not Samuel. Sam liked being plain Sam. It was a good name for a man who was to have such a tremendous passage through life.
When the 45th Regiment left Lindsay each summer for camp, Sam would take his son Garnet and his nephew Bernie with him. Bernie told the story, how one day a new officer came into the administration tent and addressed Major Hughes as Samuel. A barrage of oaths assailed the ears, as Sam said exactly what he thought of Samuel. In the next tent was the padre, who happened to be named Samuel. He was greatly offended.”
— Wallace MacAlpine author of "Eliza: a memoir of Eliza Jane Hughes wife of Dr. John McAlpine."
